Termite is the correct name although very commonly known as “white ants”. There are around three hundred odd species of termites but only a small portion of those termite species that have an economic effect. Termites are designed to recycle timber by eating through it to abstract the cellulous. This is a food source for termites. Unfortunately this is the very same building material that we use in the construction of our homes. This is shown by the results that one in four houses are being affected by termites at some stage.
Today’s modern construction methods have helped prevent termite attacks to houses with termite management systems implemented in early stages construction this however was not always thought of and methods of construction without systems such as older style homes where for example timber has been left inside subfloors, there is inadequate ant caps(shields), poor ventilation or no access for regular inspections leaving concealed entry points for termites are all contributing factors to termite infestations as these conditions provide conducive environments for termites and depending on the degree of your homes conditions would also determine the increased need for regular termite inspections by a licensed and insured pest manager it is recommended that the average home be inspected at least once a year.
