Rats and Mice
There are three main species of rodents that present a problem to Australian homes and business, when talking about rodents they are Norway rats Roof rats and house mouse. These three are can be heard through the ceiling or walls, or under your floor boards they form nests within your premises without warning usually during the colder months as they seek warmth. They are great climbers and make good use of pipes and trees near your building which leads to an entry point to your roof where they use materials such as insulation papers and other soft materials, in the case of the Norway rat they prefer to burrow into soil normally under the subfloor or near the house.  These rodents are all active at night and eat a variety of foods their senses such as smell, taste hearing and touch are very good but have poor sight and are thought to be the reason as to why they ran along surfaces such as walls and not into open areas. They also have what is known as (neophobia) which is the fear of new objects and this leads them to use the same route when searching for food.

 


The largest of the three weighing in at around 450grams its tail is shorter than its body it has a blunt nose ears are close set  and small it lives for about 12months and in this time is thought that it produces around 6 litters with a gestation period of 23 days each litter containing about 8 young .



Roof rat are found in more densely populated area s of houses are great climbers prefer fruit and vegetables. Nests in cavity walls and roof voids. The roof rat weighs in at around 250grams has a pointed nose and large ears, which are almost hairless. Its colour can be a grey black or brown its tail is longer then its body; it lives for 12 months during which it thought to have five litters with a gestation period of 22 days with up to 8 young per litter.

 


House mouse (Mus musculus) also known as field mouse yellow brown when found outdoors and more grey when living indoors. The ability to gain access to indoors is easy due to size and nest in areas such as roof voids walls and even cupboards when outside have the ability to burrow. Feed on many variety of foods e.g. fruit vegetables and left over from your dinner if not disposed of properly. These mice are nocturnal and contaminate areas which they forage through such as cupboards and utensils with their urine and faces.


The house mouse weighs in at around 20 grams it has a pointed nose, hairy ears and tail is about length of body.  Lives for about one year during which time it has up to 10 litters with a gestation period of 20 days each producing up to 6 young.
