Types of Pests - BEES and WASPS


Bees are important to agriculture as they produce honey bees wax and pollination to a variety of food crops. Bees live in colonies the queen searches for a suitable nest and each spring new nest will emerge.  


Mortar Bee
Mortar bees are large with coloured bands across the abdomen. They nest in banks of hard soil or sand. Female mortar bees often make their burrows deep into the mortar of houses with brick foundation walls and poor quality mortar, causing damage to the construction.


Native Bee
The native bee does not sting, it is about 4mm in size but may be a nuisance if nests in walls to premises.
It is a much smaller bee and of a different colour. They nest in and around houses, in trees and in hollow log sections of large stumps.

 

Honey Bee

The introduced commercial honey bee is the bee best known for its ability to produce honey and sting people when feels that it is being threatened. It will nest in cavity walls and surrounding areas of houses such as hollow trees or you may see a cluster of bees cling to one another in a dense swarm hanging down from branch on a tree. They are about 12mm in size with yellow-brown to black in colour.

European Wasps

European wasps measure from 12-15mm black bodies with horizontal yellow bands; their wings are full and cover their bodies. Males are larger in body up to 20mm. They are found nesting in ground areas such as tree stumps and landscape garden materials it is not uncommon to find them nesting in wall cavity or roof voids.
They feed on flowers, fruits and other little insects to obtain protein and carbohydrates. The queen will establish a nest in a suitable location in which she will commence building her colony by laying eggs. European wasps have the ability to sting several times it is recommended that a professional be called in to eradicate colony.


Paper Wasps

Paper Wasps are often found around the gardens, window ledges or under eaves of house. Their nest is best described to be a papery material which is attached by a strong stalk to materials such as window ledge. It is not uncommon to find more than one nest around the premises. These wasps are very common to suburban areas and can cause a pain full sting. They are about 20mm in size.
