Types of Pests - Ants


The worker of the White-footed house ant is 2.5-3.0mm in length - body is black in colour - pale feet.
Colonies often spread nesting site over a wide area. Nesting sites commonly found outdoors in the ground, trees, buildings, wall cavities, roof voids, etc. The entire ant colony may contain several million workers and many queens. These ants love to eat any foods that are sweet (sugar).

 


The Odorous house ant is 2 to 3 mm in length, black to brown colour. Colonies can contain more than 10,000 workers and several reproductive queens used to establish subsidiary colonies. Ants from different colonies are not aggressive toward each other. Nesting sites commonly found outdoors in the soil are usually shallow, situated under pavers or stones etc where moisture available.

 

 


Coastal brown ants are 1.5 to 2.5 mm in length. Nests are often found in walls or behind skirting boards prefer to eat meats and fats (protein).

 


Bulldog ants are 12 to 15mm in length black or red in colour. Prefer to nest in garden or bushland areas. Painful bite don’t disturb.

 


There are several species of Carpenter ants and they vary in colours, from pale brown, dark brown, brownish orange - the workers are 6 to 12 mm in length. Carpenter ants often gain entry to buildings to nest and forage. They excavate their nests in wood, creating galleries.
Carpenter ant colonies may exceed 100,000 workers, have multiple queens and travel long distances in search of food. Carpenter ants prefer to build their nests in open areas in moist wood and soil. Some species will readily infest and damage timbers in buildings.

 


Argentine Ants are brown about 1.5-3.0mm long. Located in nest mostly found outside although during wet weather may move indoors, prefer sweeter foods (sugar).

 

 


Light brown ant 2-3mm long nest in walls, ceilings and subfloors. Diet consists of meats, vegies and sweeter foods.
